Dr. Ire Timothy Sim is a graduate of the College of Music at Seoul National University. He earned the Master of Church Music and the Master of Divinity degrees from Houston Graduate School of Theology, and completed the Doctor of Ministry degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, located in the Dallas–Fort Worth.

He served in the United States for nearly nine years as a Minister of Music and for seven years as a Senior Pastor. Prior to being commissioned as a missionary to China, he also served for two years as an Associate Pastor in Hong Kong. During his ministry in the United States, he conducted the Houston Civic Orchestra and served as Music Director and Conductor for multiple major performances, including three complete performances of Messiah by George Frideric Handel, two complete performances of The Creation by Joseph Haydn, and one complete performance of Elijah by Felix Mendelssohn—widely regarded among the world’s three greatest oratorios.

Dr. Sim also taught students and engaged in campus ministry for two years at the Institute of Korean Studies of National University of Uzbekistan. During this time, he conducted the Uzbek National Choir and led the first-ever performance in Uzbekistan of Handel’s Messiah, in collaboration with the Uzbek National Orchestra.

After being sent to China, he founded Elim Music School (Shenyang Christian Conservatory of Music) in the Shenyang region, which continues to graduate students to this day. When China expelled foreign missionaries, Dr. Sim and his wife were forced to leave the country. The music school in China is now led by its own graduates—former students of Dr. Sim—who serve as instructors, while he continues to teach exclusively online.

Following their departure from China, their sending church, Elim Church Hong Kong, commissioned Dr. Sim and his wife to Germany for refugee ministry. While living in Germany and Greece, they ministered among Afghan refugees. During this ministry, the COVID-19 pandemic led them to Houston to stay with their daughter. There, Dr. Sim learned that more than 10,000 Afghan refugees had resettled in the Houston area with virtually no organized ministry support. In response, he established the Houston Afghan Refugee Center and has been faithfully leading this ministry since that time.

Dr. Sim married his wife, Vicki, in 1988. They have two children, Peter and Crystal. Their son Peter is married to Kelli, and they have a son named Christian. Today, Dr. Sim continues to serve the Lord with joy, living a blessed life together with his wife and daughter.
